Back-to-school time brings new teachers, new classrooms, new routines and many different emotions. For children, the transition does not end when the school bell rings. Moving from the structure of the school day into an afterschool environment is another important part of their experience—especially during the first few weeks.
At Kids Inc Lyons Den, our program planning is designed to make that transition feel safe, welcoming and predictable. Afterschool should not simply feel like an extension of the classroom. It should be a place where children can exhale after a busy day, reconnect with friends, make choices and gradually find their own place within the group.
Predictable routines create safety
Children settle more easily when they know what to expect. Familiar arrival routines and clear transitions help them understand how the afternoon will flow. This predictability reduces uncertainty and gives children the emotional security they need before they are ready to join activities, build relationships or try something new.
Purposeful spaces and balanced routines support every child
Our rooms are intentionally arranged with different activity stations to accommodate children’s varied needs, interests and ways of engaging. These prepared spaces are part of a structured afternoon routine filled with planned activities, creative experiences, group connection, outdoor play and more. This balance gives children a clear and engaging rhythm while allowing our team to support each child as they transition from the school day into the afterschool program.
Responsive planning connects children’s voices to the curriculum
Our monthly Activity Plan Pack brings together a variety of curriculum experiences, including our emotions program, and provides a dedicated space where children can write and share their own ideas. These contributions are returned to our Planning and Curriculum Team, who are responsible for developing the monthly activities. At the same time, our team members build close relationships with the children, learning about their interests, strengths and ways of engaging, and bringing these insights back to the wider team. By combining purposeful curriculum, children’s direct input and team’s knowledge of each group, we create a complete and responsive program in which children feel heard, represented and included.
At Kids Inc Lyons Den, good planning is not about filling every minute of the afternoon. It is about creating the conditions in which children feel secure enough to be themselves. Through consistent routines, caring relationships, purposeful spaces and meaningful choices, we help each child transition from school, settle into the program and find their place.
As a new school year begins, that sense of safety and belonging is the foundation from which everything else can grow.
